Generational Showdown for #1

Jake Gauthier has been sitting on top of the open division rankings since the 2011 Prague world championships. That position has always been vulnerable because of the other players in the mix and the plethora of points available throughout the year in Europe versus Gauthier’s limited opportunities to replenish his total in the States.

This month, the race for number one got tight. Real tight. The top three players – Jake Gauthier, Marco Prati and Randy Silvey – are within 11 points of each other, a spectacular dead heat given that each player has more than 1400 ranking points. Also significant is the fact that the three players represent three generations of freestyle. Silvey emerged in the late 1980’s, Gauthier started playing in the 1990’s, and Prati began freestyling in the 2000’s.

Even more stunning is the microscopic difference between number one and number two. By winning pairs and taking second in co-op at Paganello, Prati scored nearly 200 points and closed the gap to Gauthier, adding nearly 50 points to his best-8-results total of 1454.13. That would have given him the number one spot had Gauthier not played the Virginia States. By finishing 3rd at Fredericksberg with Arthur Coddington, Gauthier scored enough to up his total a whopping 2 points, from 1452.5 to 1454.5. He retains the number one spot by a little more than 0.3.

What’s next? It’s likely that Prati will take the number one spot with any sort of solid performance at FPAW Riccione. He did not play the 2010 FPAW in Seattle, so he has been challenging for number one without the benefit of the huge points the world championships offer. After Riccione, he will have point totals for two FPAW’s, while Gauthier and Silvey must replace hundreds of points from the 2010 FPAW. In 2010, Gauthier was 2nd in co-op and 3rd in pairs, which contribute more than 400 points toward his ranking. Silvey placed 3rd in co-op and 4th in pairs, contributing more than 300 points toward his ranking.

On the other hand, all three players have huge upside, meaning the value of their worst (8th best) result is low. Prati’s is the strongest at 114 points. Gauthier’s is 89 points. Silvey’s is a mere 24 points. Any result that earns more than that 8th best result increases their ranking points. That puts all the summer tournaments into play, especially for Gauthier and Silvey. A win at any tournament with 20 players or more is worth at least 125 points, so there is a lot of opportunity for any of the three to shore up their totals before Riccione. Gauthier is already entered in June’s Jammers Championships and US Open.

And let’s not forget the other top players. Who would have predicted that Gauthier would jump from #11 to #1 after Prague? Anything can happen. Claudio Cigna is defending 0 points in pairs from the 2010 FPAW, and he won the title in 2011. Four other players have more than 1300 points, and with the absence of number of top American players in Riccione, they will have less of a battle for the top spots (and points). Both Joakim Arveskär and Reto Zimmerman have big upsides (82.5 points and 72 points respectively), so any strong performance in pairs could move them up.

One final note: Judith Haas retook the number one spot on the women’s rankings from Eleonora Imazio. This shuffling has more to do with points falling off the rankings than new points being added, as Haas is taking a break from competition to have a child.

The 2012 FPA Disc Rocks

Just got my 2012 Freestyle Players Association (FPA) disc (plus some whiz rings plus an instructional DVD!!!) for renewing my FPA membership. Freestyle is fortunate to have a lot of talented graphic designers in its ranks, and each year it seems like the disc design contest comes up with something surprising and wonderful. I’m especially fond of this year’s Mayan Apocalypse theme:

And detail from the design

Art design for discs is notoriously tricky. The most ambitious visions inevitably run into the limitations of the hotstamp process. The lines are too thick. Or maybe they’re too thin. Or maybe the lines are all within range, but the difference between the thickest and thinnest lines is too great. Then there are those freestylers, who want the center of the disc free of art. It’s more tricky than it seems.

Congrats to Dave Bolyard on his 2012 design. Love it! And here’s the man behind the design:

New Look and Location for Shrednow

I switched Shrednow over to a new web host and updated the engine that drives the site. Part of that included selecting a new look for the site. The new design might be temporary or permanent depending on what people like.

On the old site, I had to turn commenting off because of aggressive spammers. Commenting is on now, though all comments will get approved manually to sift through the spam.

2012 Wintershred

This past Saturday, jammers from Monterey to Seattle converged upon the sands of San Francisco’s Ocean Beach for this years Wintershred. The weather was beautiful and the jams lasted all afternoon. This years participants included Dan Maggalanes, Doug Korns, Mark Regalbuti, Mike Esterbrook, Tam Wolfe, Mike Galloupe, Scott Weaver, Arthur Coddington, and Carl Dobson.

wintershred is mostly about the jamming, but we did take a break for a quick sort of competitive round of pairs freestyle. Each group got 4 minutes and were judged, as Dan termed it, on the old ‘Wham-O’ system, a 1-10 scale. Added to that were 3 bonus point moves that could add up to 2 points each to the teams score. The results are as follows;

4th Place: Doug and Tam – These two really played well. They had to deal with some of the stronger offshore winds of all of the groups and hit some really cool stuff along the way.
3rd Place: Mike E. and Dan – Good co-ops, Mike utilized his beach passing game, while Dan shredded out some big series ending in great seals. They were right up there, but didn’t get much in the bonus point category.
2nd Place: Mike G. and Scott – Played excellent and really could have played the best of all. These guys shredded. All day Mike was impressing with his shred or die style and big catches. This teams Gitis ratio was beyond all the other teams combined. Unfortunately for them this was the first year we didn’t have the Gitis as a bonus move. Scott showed off his rolling prowess and spin discterity while hitting some huge seals. They played very clean as well.
1st Place: Buti and Carl – Not perfect by any means, but we did hit some big multi-spin moves combos and garnered a few more bonus points which helped us get to the top spot.

Arthur decided to sit out the competitive round but he was a force all day in the jams. He took advantage of the constant breeze and hit an incredible variety of difficult turbo multi spinning moves. Mike Galloupe and Arthur had a little tumble rumble going. But I think Arthur’s triple spinning front dive to a prone bad attitude may have taken honors. Without equal, Galloupe’s thunderous crash and burn Gitis’s had us shaking our heads all afternoon. He had local beach goers on edge as each subsequent gitis threatened to unhinge the mighty San Andreas fault which runs underneath Ocean Beach. On Monday morning there was a 4.2 quake nearby that shook much of the Bay Area. Could Seattle be next?

The highlight of the day came late as we took a moment to honor an amazing freestyle feat of one of our fellow jammers, Doug Korns. Through this past year Doug has swept an amazing 16 consecutive Masters, Grandmasters, and Super Grandmaster world freestyle titles. A record that will be difficult to ever duplicate again. Mike and Tam came up with the idea to create an award to honor Doug ‘The Sweeper’s’achievement. Tam is a gifted artist and sculpture and she created a very impressive glass piece and presented it to Doug. All in all it was a great way to cap an incredible day of fun and jam on the San Francisco shore.

Hope you can join us at one of our next jams,

Carl Dobson
