Music can be one of the most memorable elements of a competition routine. Sure, sometimes a team will just let one member choose a jam song and play to it, but many times a team’s music is an expression of their collective musical taste.
What were pairs teams playing to at the 2003 Worlds in Rimini? What are some other memorable songs used in routines?
Listed below are the songs I have identified from Open Pairs in Rimini, with links to Fabio Sanna’s video of each routine. To correct mistakes or add missing info, leave a comment or contact me:

Yo! I live in the U.K so didnt get chance to go to any of the tournaments mentioned but I’m a big music fan, and play music a lot myself. Has live music ever been used to Jam to in the past? Does anyone think this would be a good idea? It probobly wouldn’t be good to use live music in big tournaments as the music could flaw, or the band might unintentionally go to fast or to slow but if some good bands could be found then this might give shows etc. an interesting touch and a certain atmosphere/character. Just a thought.

Yo from ‘the flow’!!!
I’ve heard of lots of jams with live bands. Dave Lewis and I performed on the
stage of the Roxy in Los Angeles with a band once. I think there was a
festival in Boise where the music for the competition was whatever live
performance was happening. Live bands haven’t been used much in
competition though.
In 1996, Ted Oberhaus and John Dwork played to a live band in the FPA
Worlds pairs final. It caught people off guard and became mildly
controversial.
The live performance was unique and creative and lent a certain energy to
what Ted and John did, but it raised questions like whether Ted and John
were hitting music cues, or was the band adjusting so they could hit them.
Using the live band caused a delay and affected the flow of the competition.
Because it was a surprise, some players wondered whether a live band
should be planned in secret and whether all the teams had a fair chance to
use live music as a presentation element.
Again, it was only semi-controversial. No one got really bent out of shape,
but it opened up some new issues to think about for future competitions.
The FPA Board did some thinking afterwards and added this line to the competition manual
– “A team may play to live, un-amplified acoustic music in
competition, provided the consent of the Tournament Director is obtained
and tournament procedure is not affected.”
Since the Comp Manual is only binding for FPA events, it doesn’t limit teams
or events from exploring live music in other ways, but it does lay down some
guidelines for how live music could be integrated into competition in an
equitable way.
