Wham-O’s Careless Marketing

I was in Sportmart tonight and noticed a big display of flying discs, a model I had never seen before. I checked it out and it turned out to be one of the endless stream of light-up discs that are sold every year. Big whoop!

Then I noticed that Wham-O had redesigned the 140g All-Sport model and both the disc and the package actually looked good. Understated and sporting rather than flashy and toylike. If only I had walked away then and there.

Rankings: April 2004

As we progress through 2004, the Open Rankings will show the continued international development of freestyle. With more European events this year than ever before, European players will have an opportunity to make a big splash on the rankings.

In the meantime, European players feel a rankings setback as two Italian events from 2002 fall off the rankings this month. Points from the 2002 Italian National Championships and Acrobatic Paganello expire this month, wreaking havoc on the rankings of Italian players. At the top, Clay Collera dips from 12 to 18, Lorenzo Apriani falls from 16 to 31, and Fernando Botrugno falls from 21 to 46.

Scarecrow Catches

I can delay, brush, and roll and can do btb, bth, trail, and other simple 1-hand catches, but have found it difficult to learn the scarecrow catch.
About half the time my arm hits, a quarter of the time my hand touches the disc, but I’ve only hit the scarecrow a few times out of a hundred attempts.
Any tips?

Wintershred 2004 – Story And Pictures

Sunny skies and steady breezes graced San Francisco’s Ocean Beach on March 6 during the third annual Wintershred. Overall it was a great day of jamming and celebrating spin with a stellar group of shredaholics. Unfortunately, there was also a dose of bad news as two competitors, Mike Esterbrook and Arthur Coddington, both suffered moderate knee injuries. Both appeared to be sprains, and we all hope and pray that they will be back playing soon.

Ouch! My Knee Hurts!

Yesterday I experienced what may be the worst injury of my freestyle career. Only about a minute into playing Wintershred with Greg Riley, I leapt for a brush and came down wrong. Very wrong. My knee moved in a direction it was not designed to move. I have had plenty of injuries – sprains, tendinitis, even broken bones – but nothing felt as wrong as that landing.

Freestylin’ in the U.K !!

Myself (Johninho) and my freestyle partner (Joe ‘The Flow’) both live in the U.K. We are really into the sport and really enjoy playing. However, we do not know of any freestyle activity in the U.K (e.g tournaments we can enter, other top players, flying disc shops etc.). If you know of any freestyle activity in the U.K PLEASE let us know !!! It would be greatly appreciated.
